This experimental 5-week studio course focuses on soft sculpture through a variety of materials and techniques. From surface design to handwork, students explore a wide range of hands-on textile and sculpture techniques in both two and three dimensions. Participants will experiment with the formal aspects of soft sculpture such as material, scale, surface, volume, structure, and space through assignments focusing on surface design, drawing, and sewing. Students are encouraged to work experimentally and to push the boundaries of the media, using both traditional and non-traditional materials. This course is appropriate for beginners and those wishing to try new techniques, ideas, and materials.

Carolina's Classes

Carolina Cuevas (b. 1998) is an interdisciplinary artist, researcher, and educator based in Atlanta. She received her MFA from the California College of the Arts and her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. Her practice is rooted in the history of altar-making and the intricacies of language, primarily within American and Caribbean society. Cuevas combines materials, such as textiles and clay, with found or foraged materials to make her sculptures.

Her work has been included in exhibitions at Minnesota Street Project, Berkeley Art Center, International Ceramics Studio in Kecskemet, Hungary, and Kansas City Artist Coalition. She's been an artist-in-resident at Skowhegan Art School, Montalvo Art Center, the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco, and San Jose's Quilts and Textile Museum. She has her work in the permanent collection of San Jose's Quilts and Textiles.
