Lauren's Classes

Lauren Adams teaches Beginning and Intermediate Acrylic painting, Abstract Exploration in Acrylics, and a variety of one-day workshops throughout the year including, Pet Portrait, Acrylic Color Mixing, Acrylic for the Absolute Beginner, etc. Each year, she also teaches a two-week drawing and painting Intensive for teens in the summer. She describes her teaching style as very laid back in the classroom, but also tend to be very systematic in the way she structures her classes. She begins with the fundamentals: color theory and composition, and move forward from there. Students in her classes get a lot of one-on-one time. She encourages them to get out of their comfort zone and fosters a supportive classroom atmosphere so that students feel comfortable in letting go. Lauren states, "There tends to be a feeling of community and camaraderie in my classes. They are FUN."

Lauren is a contemporary Southern artist. Born and raised in rural Georgia, she has resided in Atlanta since 1992. Although she formally trained as a commercial illustrator at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Lauren spent more than a decade owning and operating a successful decorative painting business before obtaining her M.F.A. in painting at SCAD-Atlanta. She says she has been enthralled by the natural world for as long as she can remember. This relationship comes out in her work no matter the style or medium.

She comes from three generations of educators, but came to it later in life. She was invited to teach a couple of classes, and within a few years was teaching many classes at various arts centers around town and loving it! She is still dedicated to her studio practice as well, squeezing in painting time for myself whenever I can.

Working primarily in acrylic and oil on canvas and gouache on paper, Lauren's art works run the gamut from traditional portraiture, still life and landscape, to large-scale paintings that are a hybrid of abstraction and realism.

In addition to her studio practice, Lauren teaches painting privately and at local art centers.
