FIGURE PAINTING WITH OILS: A STUDY OF THE HUMAN FORM
There are no scheduled sessions at this time. Sign up to be notified when this course is available.
This course is designed for students who consider themselves to be beyond the beginner phase of oils painting and provides an in-depth exploration of figure painting with oil paints, through direct observation of the human form. It aims to challenge and elevate your ability to represent the human body with accuracy, sensitivity, and creativity. You will engage with a live nude model in a series of structured sessions designed to develop both technical skills and a deeper understanding of human anatomy and proportion. Emphasis will be placed on capturing gesture, light, shadow, and color in a dynamic, expressive manner. Throughout the course, you will refine your abilities in oil painting techniques, with a focus on translating three-dimensional space to two-dimensional surfaces. Special attention will be given to composition, perspective, and the translation of physical forms into visual language. Discussions on historical and contemporary approaches to figure painting will inform your work, encouraging you to engage critically with both classical and modern interpretations of the human body. You will be expected to develop their own artistic voice, incorporating the skills learned into their personal practice. NOTE: THE REGISTRATION FEE DOES NOT INCLUDE MODEL FEES. THOSE FEES WILL BE COLLECTED BY THE INSTRUCTOR DURING THE FIRST CLASS. See spruillarts.org for a list of supplies needed for this class.
