In this class we’ll use the figure as a starting point for telling stories. Unlike an illustration, which is a drawing meant to accompany the written word, a narrative drawing tells a story without words. We'll begin with sketches, pushing our technical abilities, then use those sketches as the basis for larger works. We'll try out different drawing techniques and materials and different ways of approaching storytelling. Working with narrative, it’s easy to remember that art is a type of play.
In his artwork, and in his teaching, Ian has one foot in tradition and one in innovation. He wants to help you to create the best work you can, and to help you find your unique creative voice.
Materials for this workshop are included in the registration fee.

Ian is a painter and muralist based in Seattle. Originally from Georgia, he received a BFA from the Atlanta College of Art and an MFA from the University of Washington. His narrative paintings mix autobiography with fiction and mythology. He has painted large-scale murals across the United States, many of which involve community collaboration. He has taught art at the Penland School of Craft, Arrowmont, the John Campbell Folk School, and the University of Washington. When he's not painting or teaching, he's exploring the high peaks of the Cascades or swimming in a mountain lake.
