MAD SCIENCE: ETCHING WITH SALT WATER
There are no scheduled sessions at this time. Sign up to be notified when this course is available.
Forget about etching with corrosive chemicals that are difficult to store and dispose of! Achieve unique surface designs on copper, brass, nickel or steel, or sterling silver, using regular salt water or a chemical salt, plus electricity. In this workshop you will experiment with this easy technology to put your own (or other copyright-free) designs on flat sheets of metal. You can make your own texture plates for embossing or etch directly on metal to use in your fabrication. You will try different types of etching resist, and use hand drawn or photo-transferred images. Etched metal is great for jewelry, mixed media art, ornaments and commemorative pieces. Possibilities abound! Equipment kits with some materials will be provided, at a cost of $100 payable to instructor. Additional supplies and materials will be discussed in the first session. This class is open to students with at least one quarter of metalsmithing experience.
