Come have an exciting time in the studio playing with fire and learning how to turn your clean sterling silver scrap into workable sheet and wire ready for your next jewelry project. Students will melt their sterling silver scrap, with added sterling silver casting grain, in a crucible and pour into both sheet and wire steel ingots molds. Then, students will roll and draw the ingots into a variety of gauges of sheet and profiles of wire. Saturday we will pour metal and start using the rolling mills. On Sunday we will finish rolling and then drawing wire, and the class time will be split into 2 groups of 4 students. There will be two sheet and two wire rolling mills in the classroom, as well as a drawplate bench. This class has a maximum of 8 students. NOTE: Rolling sheet and drawing wire is a continuous and strenuous activity, and students should take breaks as needed. PREREQUISITE: 3 Jewelry/Metalsmithing classes or permission of the instructor. See the Supply List at www.spruillarts.org for further information regarding preparing your scrap, casting grain cost and information needed for the workshop. Registration cut-off two weeks prior to the first day of class. More images of samples may be found at www.joannehernandezmetals.com.
