Discover the rewarding craft of spindle turning while making meaningful, handmade gifts for the holiday season. This six-session beginner course introduces students to the woodturning lathe with no prior experience required. Each session focuses on building core spindle skills — safety, tool control, basic cuts, and finishing — while producing a small, giftable project drawn from a range of upcoming holidays and cultural traditions, including Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Diwali. Projects include tool handles, kitchen utensils, spinning tops, dreidels, ornaments, candle holders, and decorative finials. Students leave with several finished pieces ready for gift-giving, plus the foundational skills to keep turning long after class ends. All tools and materials provided. SAFETY REQUIREMENTS Students should not wear open shirts, long sleeve shirts, gloves or shorts. Closed toed shoes are required. Long hair must be pulled back. N95 masks to be worn during turning. Full face shields to be worn when operating machinery See spruillarts.org for a detailed list of the safety requirements.
