Laura teaches drawing classes for preschool and elementary school children. After 20 years as an early childhood educator and director, Ms. Vandewiele began teaching children's drawing classes in 2012. She teaches Young Rembrandts drawing and cartooning classes at elementary schools in Dekalb, Fulton, and Atlanta Public Schools.
As a Young Rembrandts instructor, Laura enjoys seeing children's creativity and imagination flourish as they learn to combine shapes, colors, and patterns to create the most amazing artwork. Children who learn to draw using the Young Rembrandts method develop spatial reasoning, fine motor skills, order and sequencing abilities, visualization, and self-discipline as well as fundamental art skills. The Young Rembrandts curriculum introduces concrete ideas and techniques that enlarge children's visual vocabularies, expand their imaginations and enrich their minds. Laura believes true creativity comes forth when mastery of core art skills is combined with original thought. As the foundation of all visual arts, learning to draw gives children the skills and confidence they need to continue participating in the arts throughout their lives.
Laura says she always wanted to work with children and loves to see their development over time. She likes to see the artwork they create! Her favorite artist is Vincent Van Gogh. She loves his paintings style and the landscapes from his time in France. She is also fascinated by reptiles, including snakes, lizards, and especially turtles.
In addition to drawing, Laura has worked in Stained Glass, Fabric Arts, Jewelry Making, and Photography. When not teaching, Laura enjoys hiking, whitewater rafting, and backpacking.
