In this two day hands-on workshop we will learn ways to create rustic and organic forms on and off the wheel. We will start with making faceted yunomis and explore different ways to create rustic surfaces using slips, dry clays and sodium silicate. We will make bowls and plates with organic edges and also delve into kurinuki carving to make asymmetrical pieces like ikebana vases and rock bowls. We will discuss glazing techniques that would help enhance the rustic look in cone 6 oxidation. Previous wheel and/or handbuilding experience is required for this workshop.
All clay and tools will be provided. However, feel free to bring your own clay tools if you'd like. Previous wheel and/or handbuilding experience are required for this workshop.

Shikha's Classes

Shikha Joshi is a studio potter based in Round Rock, Texas. Born and raised in New Delhi, India, Joshi learned ceramics through community classes and workshops in the US. Her work has been featured at prominent galleries like Companion, Charlie Cummings Gallery and Clayakar. She has exhibited at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts where her work is part of their permanent collection. Joshi has been published in Ceramic Monthly, Surface Design for Ceramics, and 500 Platters. She has taught numerous workshops nationally and internationally, sharing her process for creating rustic surfaces within the constraints of an electric kiln.
